Nationally known forester Lee Frelich, Ph.D. director of the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology, will lead a hike in the temperate hardwood forests on the Door peninsula’s warmer bay side. These forests show what might replace the boreal forests on the much cooler lake side in a future warmer climate: forests of sugar maple, beech, and hemlock with trillium and spring ephemerals in the understory as opposed to fir, spruce, pine and paper birch with evergreen herbs like twinflower in the understory of boreal forests.
