Despite the grave danger climate change poses, the U.S lacks political will for coordinated action at the national level. Instead states, cities and communities are taking their own steps in reducing their carbon footprint. This presentation looks at the steps necessary to bring an individual institution to carbon neutrality. Clark will explore both the opportunities that the site offers and the constraints. Careful consideration of goals, existing infrastructure, building use, cost, and regulatory constraints is essential; there is no one right approach to carbon neutrality.

Clark earned his undergraduate degree in geology and environmental studies at Middlebury College. He began teaching at Lawrence University in 1998 after earning his Ph.D. in geography and environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Clark’s research examines the anthropogenic impacts on river systems. Clark is also part of the Environmental Studies Program at Lawrence University, which he chaired for six years. He led Lawrence’s first efforts in sustainability in 2008-2011 as chair of the “Green Roots” committee and has recently served as special assistant to the president for sustainability and co-chair of the Sustainability Steering Committee. He is also serving as the project coordinator for the Net-Zero Bjorklunden Initiative.
